CoALA-SPECT: a coded aperture laboratory animal SPECT system for pre clinical imaging

چکیده
We have previously demonstrated the potential of multi-pinhole coded apertures when used in conjunction with compact pixelated detectors for high resolution, high sensitivity small animal SPECT. We are now constructing a prototype SPECT system with three such detectors mounted on a rotating gantry. Each detector comprises a 12 cm diameter circular array of NaI(Tl) crystals, each 1x1x5 mm3 on a 1.25 mm pitch. Each crystal array is coupled to a Hamamatsu R3292 12.7 cm diameter PS-PMT. Signals from the three detectors are read out by a custom subtractive resistive circuit and multiplexed. Data are acquired by a National Instruments PCI-6110E board running on a Macintosh dual processor G4 computer under Kmax software control. Images are reconstructed using a 3D iterative MAP-EM algorithm based on a multi-pinhole forward and back projector. The trade-off between contrast and variance was studied by simulation for a number of multipinhole configurations. We also performed initial planar imaging studies on one of the detectors. Our results indicate that spatial resolution approaching 1 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM) can be achieved with a single pinhole aperture, while improved contrast and variance may result from using optimized multi-pinhole apertures.

Basic design and simulation of a SPECT microscope for in vivo stem cell imaging
The need to understand the behavior of individual stem cells at the various stages of their differentiation and to assess the resulting reparative action in pre-clinical model systems, which typically involves laboratory animals, provides the motivation for imaging of stem cells in vivo at high resolution. Our initial focus is to image cells and cellular events at single cell resolution in vivo...
متن کاملSPECT Imaging of 2-D and 3-D Distributed Sources with Near-Field Coded Aperture Collimation: Computer Simulation and Real Data Validation.
The imaging of distributed sources with near-field coded aperture (CA) remains extremely challenging and is broadly considered unsuitable for single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT). This study proposes a novel CA SPECT reconstruction approach and evaluates the feasibilities of imaging and reconstructing distributed hot sources and cold lesions using near-field CA collimation and...

University of Illinois, USA We will report the design and performance of a MR-compatible SPECT system that utilizes a dual-FOV aperture design for microscopic SPECT imaging of small animals inside an pre-existing MR scanner. The MRC-SPECT-DF system consists of a full ring of high resolution CdTe detectors and an aperture that consists of dual-FOV aperture system design that has two sets of aper...
متن کاملEvaluation of the performance of parallel-hole collimator for high resolution small animal SPECT: A Monte Carlo study
Introduction: Image quality and accuracy of in vivo activity quantification in SPECT are affected by collimator penetration and scatter components, especially in high energy imaging. These phenomena highly depend on the collimator characteristic and photon energy. The presence of penetrated and scattered photons from collimator in SPECT images degrades spatial resolution, contr...
